Summer is winding down and back to school sales are picking up as families prepare to get back to class! Today and every day we hope your days are full of fun and, of course, always safe. Soon our familiar yellow buses will be rolling down the streets again and it is a good time to be reminded of some of our favorite back-to-school safety tips.
Red and Yellow aren’t just the colors of Autumn leaves, they are also the colors everyone should recognize walking, biking, or driving along our streets. When it comes to school buses, it is important to remember that YELLOW FLASHING lights are your sign to slow down and if you see RED, control your bullish instincts and come to a full stop. Red lights are your indication a bus has stopped to pick up or drop off a student. For your safety and that of our community, it is important to always pay attention. Remember it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus, don’t be in a hurry to cause an accident or get a ticket.
As you drive into school zones beware of changing speed limits and pay attention to school crossing guards and staff who may be directing traffic in the area. It is always a time to be alert as children are often making their way to and from school.
If you are a student or parent shuffling your little one to a bus stay mindful of the area around you. Check both ways before crossing the street and look to your bus driver for an okay to cross. They are your eyes and ears as they often can see further than you can. Always make sure the bus has completely stopped and that their stop sign and lights are fully engaged to inform drivers.
School traffic safety is important all year long. So always be prepared and aware of your surroundings. Stay safe and have a great school year and beyond.
